Do you remember the Ford Explorer Sport? That model was launched in the early days of the launch of the Explorer, a special trim level of the popular five-passenger sport utility vehicle. The Explorer Sport was eventually discontinued and the Explorer itself was updated, bypassing its truck bed for a car-based unibody chassis. For 2013, the Explorer Sport is back, a four-wheel drive model that stands out for off-road performance and handling.
Engine and transmission
The 2013 Ford Explorer Sport is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V-6 engine. This EcoBoost engine produces 365 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 350 pound-feet of torque at 3,500 rpm. This 24-valve direct injection engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission with shift capabilities. Ford also includes paddle activation for people looking for spirited driving.
The Explorer sport uses regular grade gasoline. It has an EPA rating of 16 miles per gallon in the city and 22 miles per gallon on the highway.
Powertrain and suspension
The Explorer Sport is equipped with a terrain management system, which brings all-wheel drive capabilities to this model. Drivers can choose from four settings: snow, sand, mud, and hill descent.
Drivers benefit from electric power steering and a sporty suspension. Front suspension with MacPherson struts and an anti-roll bar are complemented by an independent multi-link rear suspension with an anti-roll bar. Front and rear ventilated disc brakes and four-channel ABS are standard. All models are equipped with 20-inch BSW all-season tires.
The Explorer Sport weighs 4,921 pounds and is 5,000 pounds. towing capacity when properly equipped.
The Explorer has a 112.6-inch wheelbase and is 197.1 inches long. Measures 90.2 inches wide and 71.0 inches tall. The front and rear tracks measure 67.0 identical inches.
The seating capacity is for six or seven passengers. Total passenger volume measures 151.7 cubic feet. Cargo volume is 21 cubic feet behind the third row seat, 43.8 cubic feet with the rear seat folded down, and 80.7 cubic feet behind the first row.
The interior of the Sport has ample passenger space and is elegantly decorated. Contrasting stitching can be found on the seats and on the steering wheel, with two-tone leather, brushed aluminum trim and sports logos prominently displayed.
This model also offers many of the comforts today’s drivers want and expect. Ford SYNC with MyFord Touch, a passenger wi-fi access point and Bluetooth connectivity are standard. Also included are remote start, a manual tilt and telescoping steering column, dual-zone climate control, and a 12-speaker premium audio system. A navigation system with a trial SiriusXM satellite radio system is available.
