Southern Fool Sayings

If you have a sense of humor, be prepared to smile. These sayings are from the deep south.

1. Hinny – Your butt. Usage example: “Stop doing that or I’ll kick your ass!”

2. Paddle – Whipping. Usage example: See the example above.

3. Bubba: any man from the south. This term can be applied to a dear friend or it can be the real name of the person he is talking to. Usage example: “Bubba, I just don’t get it.”

4. Junior – Any southern male. This can also be a real given name. It is sometimes used to refer to Southern males under the age of twenty. Usage example: “Go ask Junior.”

5. Thirst – Say. Usage example: “Because I was ready!”

6. Ort – Should or shouldn’t. Usage examples: “Don’t go there!” “You have to say it!”

7. Tie a can of rocks to your tail – This saying means what it says. Usage example –
I want to tie a can of rocks to your tail! This statement is usually made to the bad child.
It’s only an expression. As far as I know, this task is impossible to do.

8. About to burst: This saying describes being full after eating a great southern meal.
Usage example: “No, I don’t want food anymore, I’m about to explode.”

9. Duttin – To be sure. Does or doesn’t. Another term for the word no. Usage example – “Duttin that bus coming soon?”

10. You may want horns, but may die on your head: This means you may want something, but you may never get it. I think this saying is easy to understand.
It is usually said to a child asking for the moon.

11. Wait until the cows come home – This saying means that you could be waiting quite a while. Usage example: “Well, you could wait until the cows come home for the phone to ring.” In the south, cows usually return home just before dark, but sometimes they get confused and stay in pastures, woods, or fields instead of returning to the barn area to feed. You never know, with cows. They may or may not go home.

12. Hit the bushes – Go to the bathroom. Usage example: “I’ll stop the car and you can hit the bushes.”

13. Heifer: a bad or distant girl. This word also describes a female cow.
Usage example: “I tried to be nice to her, but she’s a heifer.”

14. That dog will hunt: This saying means that you came up with a good plan or idea.
Usage example – “Going to the races? That dog is going to hunt.”

15. Huzzy – A dirty or mean woman. This term can also be used to refer to the woman who ran away with her husband. Usage example-“Yeah, she really dumped me for that huzzy!”

16. South Mouth – A gossip. This term is used to describe a southern person who tells everyone everything. Usage example – “Why did you say anything to that southern mouth?”

17. Ruts – Beginnings. This word can also describe the roots of your hair or the roots of a plant or a reference to your heritage or family. Usage example: “Have you ever researched your routines?”

18. A mind to – This means that the person may or may not do what they are thinking of doing. Example: “I’m willing to row your hinny for doing that!”

19. Fixin: This southern word means getting ready to do something. Usage example – “I’m getting ready to go.”

20. Cain’t never could: This southern saying means that if you don’t try, then you can’t succeed. Cain’t, a southern word, is a cross between are not, can’t and the southern word ain’t.
