The difference between the Venetian masks and the masks for the Italian theater

Today, Venetian masks are mostly fashion accessories that we wear during a themed masquerade party or fancy dress event. Traditionally speaking, these masks have rich historical significance, especially in the Italian theater where they were used to represent different characters on stage.

Most people tend to confuse the Venetian masquerade masks used in carnivals with the masks used in the theater. Also known as Commedia Dell’Arte masks, theatrical variants were employed to exhibit specific traits in a character or to represent a particular profession.

Types of Theatrical Masks –

Although you can find theatrical masks that look like quintessential masquerade masks on a stick or even ones that can be tied with a ribbon, they actually have some distinct differences:

1. The Burrattino Mask: This particular mask essentially comes with a long nose and a small face for comedic effect. It is also often referred to as the Pinnocho mask and is typically worn by those characters who are expected to be funny and endearing. Characters wearing this mask are generally not the main or significant characters.

2. The Arlecchino Mask: This type of theatrical mask usually comes with a distinctive red marking of some shape on the forehead. This could represent a scar or pimple. In addition to this feature, the mask can come in various shapes and sizes. However, another distinguishing feature worth noting is the flat nose and lack of a mouth. This particular mask is usually cut just below the nose. This mask usually depicts an impoverished character in torn, tattooed garb.

3. The Brighella Mask – This mask is usually worn by the villain or an achievement of the Arlecchino. These skins are usually green and represent the character’s love of wealth and money bordering on greed. This character is also often referred to as Figaro and he or she is often the schemer in a story.

4. Captain Saramouche Skin – This particular skin is given by a character who is young with a sense of adventure or an old sailor who comes with many interesting adventure stories. This character usually narrates stories of bravery, glory and is usually the hero. His attire is designed to impress and this character is usually a great lover and popular with the ladies.

While Venetian masquerade masks and theatrical masks come with rich histories, the latter is used to represent a variety of traits, characteristics, and emotions in an Italian setting. You will be able to buy these novelty costume masks and theatrical masks online or on the go. Use them at your next costume event or simply hang them on a wall to add a touch of elegance to your room.
