Treat yourself to a new cabinet design this Christmas

Despite being a busy time for social events, the amount of free time we have over the holidays can make them a surprisingly good time for a home makeover. This could be in the name of a nice Christmas present for yourself, or it could be to spruce up your house for any future guests you may receive.

Kitchen upgrades are an option, but if you don’t want a complete makeover this year, why not think about a new cabinet design? Refinishing or replacing old cabinets can do wonders for the look of a kitchen, accentuate your appliances, and give your home a whole new feel.

Of the three easy ways to liven up your home for the holidays, there are two that you could easily do yourself and one that will likely require the help of a professional. Getting a fresh coat of paint on your cabinets or replacing hardware represents the former, and having custom built cabinets the latter.

artful shades of gray

A fresh coat of paint can make it look like some serious cabinet design has been done in your kitchen.

And while new color schemes often include, well, color, gray cabinets are gaining popularity these days. White is still the standard color, but shades of gray are becoming more common.

Incorporating lighter shades of gray into cabinetry design helps pair cabinets with stainless steel fixtures, appliances, and lighting, while cream gray colors also pair well with light-colored marble or quartz countertops, making it adds some warmth to your kitchen and keeps it from looking sterile.

For kitchens with stained wood pieces, such as dining tables or movable end tables, consider a darker shade of gray that isn’t too contrasting.

Add some unique cabinet accessories

If that plain old plastic knob on your cabinet is starting to look a bit dated, it might be time to show off your own cabinet design skills with some non-traditional cabinet hardware.

Your cabinet and drawer hardware, including pulls, knobs, and handles, make a bigger impression than you might think. Replacing the old hardware with some flashy, shiny new handles and knobs will be the perfect complement to a fresh coat of paint.

You could go the traditional route and add nice porcelain or brushed nickel, but a more modern approach may better suit your style. Today, people are exploring new materials like art glass, crystal, and even rubber. Some even use pieces of string, creating a unique look to your cabinet design that you’ll enjoy every time you open a cabinet.

If you’re crafty and creative, you could even make your own hardware out of little embellishments. Experimenting with this is harmless, as cabinet hardware is usually easy to change.

Consider custom cabinet designs

If you find yourself without the cabinet space you need in your kitchen, it may be time to consider a custom cabinet layout design.

While this will cost more than a lick of paint or new hardware, custom-built cabinets for your kitchen will impress and give you all the storage space you need. In some cases, for kitchens with an odd layout, custom cabinet design may be your only option.

Custom designed cabinets have many advantages over their pre-built cousins; especially for demanding owners. All aspects of cabinetry can be customized, from the type of wood to the finish it is given, and from the types of joints and braces to the aforementioned hardware.

You can also have your cabinets built to suit you personally. Taller people can request cabinets with taller shelves, while shorter people can take advantage of the cabinet’s design that puts everything within easy reach.

When the festive period gives us a good amount of free time, it can be a good opportunity to refresh our kitchen.

This can be in the form of a few fresh coats of paint. It may mean upgrading the hardware. It could also mean investing in a new cabinet design. Whatever you decide to do, having a kitchen with a new look is a fantastic way to start the new year.
