Knowing the differences between laptops, notebooks and netbooks

In this age of technology, it’s almost a necessity to have your own laptop, be it a laptop, notebook or netbook. But wait, aren’t they all the same? The short answer – no. They are all names for different types of laptops. What is the difference between them? That’s the long answer, and that’s what this article will cover.

Laptops

The laptop was created out of people’s ever-increasing need for portability and accessibility. Computers have become an integral part of everyday processes and thus it has become a necessity to carry this technology with you wherever you go.

The first laptops were made in the mid-1970s, and laptop technology has come a long way since then. They are classified as mobile computers and incorporate all the necessary elements of a desktop computer, namely the monitor, keyboard, mouse (touch pads on most laptops), speakers, power supply (a rechargeable battery for laptops) and the CPU itself.

The main selling point of laptops is the portability they provide, getting more done even when you’re away from home: at the coffee shop, on the go, while waiting for your trip, etc. Inexpensive laptops have also appeared, but more on that later.

Laptops

The laptop, on the other hand, is the newest form of laptops. Simply put, the notebook is the lighter and more compact version of the laptop. The laptop, especially the older models, although portable, is heavy and bulky.

Of course, people want their laptops to be easy to carry and much more streamlined so they fit in bags without looking like a big bulk. Notebooks and laptops have all the necessary components in common, only the size is different. It was necessary to give them new names because the technology put into creating these laptops to significantly reduce the size is a recent development.

Laptops

And then comes the netbook. They can be considered as the cheapest laptops. This is because they are portables (which are lighter versions of laptops) that have their capabilities tuned primarily for internet use only. Most have expanded to include at least word processors, but their primary use is still connecting to the Internet via Wi-Fi in places that support it. They were first introduced to the market at the end of 2007 and since then their specifications have steadily increased.

Notebooks and Laptops

When choosing between the three which one you want to buy, you must take into account what you want the laptop for. That is the main factor when deciding between a laptop, notebook and netbook.

If you’re going to be doing important work like video editing or heavy online gaming, you need the power of a laptop. If you only need it for simpler processes like light gaming and other applications, you can try to see if a laptop is enough for you.

If all you need is Internet access and some word processing, then the netbook would be the one for you while providing you with great savings. It would be impractical to buy a top-of-the-line laptop when all you’re going to do is check your MySpace page.
