Microwave ovens: advantages and disadvantages

Microwaves are one of the greatest inventions for your home kitchen. These kitchens absorb the energy of the food inside the microwave. The water in the food is what makes the food cook. This is accomplished by vibrating food particles against each other, which creates heat for cooking. The more power the microwave has, the faster the food will cook. If you find that your microwave doesn’t have a lot of power, you can achieve the same thing by adding more minutes to your cooking time.

I think you would agree that a microwave has far more advantages than disadvantages. The time savings alone is one of the biggest advantages. It is not necessary to defrost food before cooking as in most cases. Your microwave can defrost your food in seconds and then cook it in minutes. This not only saves you time but also money.

No more heating up the whole house to cook your meat on a hot day. Just pop the meat in the microwave and cook it without heating up the stove. During the summer this is great. Cooler workplace in the kitchen while cooking and saving air to keep it cool.

My wife really likes cleanliness when she uses the microwave. You don’t have the mess you can get from using the stove. If you make a mess in the microwave, simply wipe it down with a damp cloth and you’re good to go again. Using the stove will require more work during cleanup.

Some of the disadvantages of using the microwave are the utensils that can be used for cooking. Do not put any metallic object in the microwave. You will kill your microwave. There are also certain dishes that cannot be put in a microwave. Most items you use for cooking will tell you if they can be used in a microwave. Just make sure and check before using.

Another downside is that some foods will take longer to cook because they weren’t cooked all the way through the first time. It’s just a matter of adding a few more minutes to the cooking time, which is not a big deal. Sometimes just stirring the food during the cooking time will help prevent the food from undercooking. Either way is better than using the stove.

There are more pros than cons to using a microwave for cooking. If you really like to cook, the microwave may not be your first choice for cooking. But for those who don’t like to cook and are pressed for time, the microwave is the one for you.
