Holidays in Cuba: My honeymoon on the beach of Varadero

When we get married many times we visualize a fantastic honeymoon in a spa where the only thing that can be enjoyed are crystal clear waters and a shining sun, with a lot of ocean peace. If you add some water sports and lots of nightlife, you will find yourself on a getaway to the Caribbean, where Cuba can be a good destination for newlyweds.

As I was looking for a quiet and romantic honeymoon with my husband in Varadero, my favorite beach destination in Cuba, our lodging option was the Blau Varadero hotel due to its excellent reviews. When we got there, the first thing I noticed was its magnificent architecture, resembling an unusual pyramid. The hall was splendid, large; It has an understated elegance that blends seamlessly into its surroundings. If you are thirsty, like we were from the 2-hour drive from Havana city, you can enjoy some welcome drinks offered by the hotel at reception, such as tropical fruit juices and cider. Although check in was at 4:00 pm, we arrived early and had lunch at Barbacoa Las Adelfas in the pool area while we waited for our room to be ready. The view was nice and the service was good, but the buffet was light for eaters like my husband. There was a large variety of salads, fruit, burgers, fries, hot dogs and there were 3 flavors of ice cream for dessert. You can also have a light lunch on the beach, at the La Duna Snack bar, from 12:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., while you watch the beautiful sea. Another advantage of these places: you can keep your beach clothes casual; so Bermuda shorts, shorts and sleeveless shirts are allowed, or perhaps the blouse you prefer to wear with your bikini.

At the end of lunch time we ordered a coffee in the lobby bar (which, by the way, was spectacular), and I think it was the best place to witness the magic of the vegetation that adorns the floors of the hotel and the transparent walls of the elevators that go up and below; the sculptures and paintings on the walls and the stained glass windows. I soon realized that it was a popular place for visitors to chat and meet. This Orquídea lobby bar offers specialty cocktails from 10:00 to 00:00, but make sure you get an early seat because when the hotel is full it’s almost impossible to find a place after lunch or dinner, so my “Plan B “It would be the lovely Piano Bar on the third floor. Great atmosphere, with classical piano music, so you can sit down, order a coffee, a cocktail or simply enjoy a good whiskey while enjoying a pleasant conversation.

When it was time to go to our room, the front desk staff let us know, since we were on our honeymoon, a hotel had availability, we got an upgrade to an ocean view room on the 11th floor (the hotel has 13 floors!) and a reservation for dinner at the Palma Real Restaurant, with a good international menu. We were very happy. When we first took a look at our room, it was just amazing. From the balcony of our terrace we could see the catamarans plying the ocean, the large swimming pool with its bright blue color, the tennis courts, the restaurants, etc. You can’t help but feel very excited! The bed was a king size bed and featured a beautiful and artistic towel arrangement made by our maid. The bathroom was large and had a hairdryer, vanity mirror and beauty products such as shampoo and body wash. The Hotel Blau Varadero also gave us a bottle of wine to celebrate our honeymoon, and the hotel room had a minibar that was replenished every day with 1 bottle of water, 2 soft drinks and 2 local beers included in the Everything Package Including. So if you’re a bit lazy or just want to spend more time in the hotel room, you won’t be thirsty at all. If you feel like treating yourself or your partner, you can request a body massage at the SPA & Health Center, where there is also a sauna, steam bath, jacuzzi and hydromassage shower.

One of the moments that I enjoyed the most with my husband was sailing on a catamaran. While cruising with a hotel instructor we noticed other beautiful Varadero hotels from the translucent waters of the sea. This is without a doubt a “must do” experience on your vacation in Cuba. You can also learn to snorkel, but in the end we enjoyed a walk on the beach.

Another point in favor of staying at the Blau Varadero hotel during your honeymoon is its proximity to the Dolphinarium, a place that you will want to visit, especially if you are a big fan of these incredible intelligent animals. There is a great 1 hour show with dolphins, and you can also take a picture with them and even swim with them!

Evaluate Cuba and Varadero beach for your honeymoon or vacation. We had a wonderful time and no big complaints. There are many hotels in Cuba with very good standards. The Blau Varadero was a choice that we do not regret.
