Weekly Review: Re: Zero

Our main protagonist of the series is a high school student known as Subaru. Subaru is the lazy type who prefers to stay locked in his room playing games and things like that. You have no real life aspirations, you live one moment at a time. On his way back from a convenience store one night, he suddenly appears in another world. As he looks around, confused, he identifies the world as a fantasy land. Your play instincts kick in when you begin to assess your surroundings. He realizes that he speaks the same language as the people here, but his clothes and money are not good. The elements that you have in your person from your world are also unknown to it, elements like your cell phone.

As he sits in an alley contemplating his first move and waiting for a beautiful woman to appear before him as in most fantasy situations, he is attacked by a group wanting his items. Thinking of the mentality of a game and that he should have super strength, he hits the first two and goes for the third. When the last enemy pulls out a knife, he sadly leans in front of him and begs for his life as he gets kicked. During that time, he is rescued by a beautiful silver-haired girl who has the ability to wield magic.

When he awakens from his beaten state, he discovers that he is completely healed, no doubt by the silver-haired maiden. She says goodbye while looking for a thief, but Subaru begs him to help her so she can pay him. Throughout their day of searching, they help a young woman who was separated from her mother. Subaru also learns that the girl’s name is Satella and that she is a half-elf. In fact, she is quite surprised when he is not afraid of her.

On their quest to find a thief, when they learn that his name is Felt, they venture into depression. They are in an old warehouse that is a kind of center for stolen goods. Subaru says that he will enter the spooky place first, so he goes inside and tries to move around the completely dark room. What he finds inside is a man, slumped against the counter, and blood everywhere. By the time he realized what had happened here, he had already been cut up and was lying on the ground. Before losing her life, she saw her friend, Satella, enter the warehouse and also lose her life.

Then suddenly he finds himself in front of a merchant in the middle of the city. Cool right? History quickly reveals that this is no ordinary person in an ordinary world. Every time Subaru dies, he goes back to a certain point in time. During the first few episodes, it is the moment when you are standing in front of a merchant moments after being transported to this fantasy world.

This is a very well done anime and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to find something new and exciting. It has a typical “a boy finds himself in a fantasy world” plot, but underneath that is something really amazing. We see Subaru as he tries to figure out what is happening and how you got to that world. It’s pretty impressive, just saying it! PS Her real name is Emilia! 🙂
