Kitchen curtains: 5 tips to do it right

Kitchen curtains are a fundamental element to finish off the decoration of the kitchen. Unfortunately, they often tend to be forgotten. However, once you have them, you’ll see the difference framing your windows with the right window treatment can make. Here are five tips to help you make the right decision.

1. Choose a simple and casual style

Fancy fringes and trains and elaborate curtain headings are best suited for formal rooms like the living room or bedroom. Keep curtains simple in a kitchen to be more in keeping with the style of the room.

2. Add impact with fabric design

While we may be hesitant to choose (and stick with) colored cabinets, curtains are a great way to add some color to a kitchen. Choose a fabric design and colors that work well with the other elements of the kitchen, whether they are contemporary, classic or country.

3. Keep them short

Sill-length curtains are generally a better match for casual style in a kitchen, although full-length curtains may be appropriate if you have a dining room window in your kitchen and use it for dining. A cafeteria-style curtain is also great if you want some privacy but don’t want to block out too much light.

4. Make sure they are washable

Kitchen curtains are likely to get a lot messier than curtains in other rooms in your home with all the steam and grease in the air. They will need to be cleaned frequently, so feel comfortable choosing a curtain or fabric that washes easily in the washing machine rather than one that requires you to make a trip to the dry cleaners.

5. Think about security

Drapes hanging over a kitchen area are not ideal. If you have a window near a kitchen, consider whether curtains are a safe option. You may be better off with a simple roller shade that stays away from flames or hot pans.
